How it works

Keytruda is a type of immunotherapy known as a programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitor. It is a monoclonal antibody that helps the body's own immune system, specifically T-cells, to detect and attack cancer cells. Some cancer cells use the PD-1 pathway to hide from T-cells, and Keytruda works by blocking this pathway, allowing the T-cells to function properly and fight the cancer.

Common Uses

Keytruda is used alone or in combination with other treatments for various types of cancer, including but not limited to:

• Melanoma (a type of skin cancer)
• Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
• Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)
• Classical Hodgkin lymphoma
• Urothelial cancer (a type of bladder and urinary tract cancer)
• Kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma)
• Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)
• Colorectal cancer with specific genetic mutations
• Endometrial cancer

Side Effects

Since Keytruda works by stimulating the immune system, it can cause the immune system to attack healthy organs and tissues, leading to serious or life-threatening problems.

Common side effects include:

• Fatigue and weakness
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Nausea and decreased appetite
• Rash or itching
• Muscle, bone, or joint pain
• Cough or shortness of breath
• Fever

Serious side effects can include:

• Inflammation of the lungs (pneumonitis), colon (colitis), liver (hepatitis), kidneys (nephritis), or hormone glands
• Infusion reactions, which can be severe
• Severe skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome
