Uses and Benefits

Minirin tablets are used to treat conditions that cause the body to produce too much urine. These conditions include:

• Diabetes Insipidus: A condition where the body loses too much water through frequent urination and excessive thirst. The medication works by helping the kidneys retain water, which reduces urine output.
• Bed-wetting (Primary Nocturnal Enuresis): For patients 6 years of age and older who have not responded to other treatments like an enuresis alarm. The tablets help by decreasing nighttime urine production.
• The medication may also be used to manage post-hypophysectomy polyuria and polydipsia, which are conditions of excessive urination and thirst after surgical removal of the pituitary gland.
• It can also reduce the bleeding tendency in patients with mild hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease by promoting the release of blood clotting factors.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Minirin tablets is determined on an individual basis by a doctor. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed, broken, or chewed. It is important to follow the dose and duration as advised by a doctor and to take it at a fixed time each day for consistency. The medication should not be stopped without consulting a doctor.

Important Precautions

It is critical to limit fluid intake while taking this medication, especially in children and the elderly, to avoid water retention and low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia). Signs of hyponatremia can include headache, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, and in severe cases, convulsions. Minirin tablets are not recommended for individuals with severe kidney impairment, known low sodium levels, or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
